Welcome everyone!

In this video we will take a first easy to understand look at

Self-regulated Learning or SRL. Regardless of your subject, country or

background, SRL is one of the strongest predictors of success at University,

especially in flexible high workload programs.

Let's explore what it means and

why it matters.

Many students feel overwhelmed at University.

There are

multiple exams

assignments

deadlines and often additional responsibilities like

work or family.

Unlike school, University gives you a lot of freedom and this

freedom requires the ability to plan

monitor or regulate your own learning.

This is exactly what we mean by self-regulated learning.

According to

Landman and colleagues

SRL means taking active control over your

thoughts, emotions and actions always in relation to a learning goal.

This

includes concentrating, planning, managing emotions, monitoring progress and

adjusting strategies.

You might hear different terms in educational research

like self-regulated or self-directed or self-managed learning.

They describe

similar ideas but SRL typically assumes that at least some learning goals are

given by the course, while self-directed learning means students choose

everything themselves.

In University, SRL is the more realistic and useful

concept.

SRL has three major components cognition, metacognition and motivation.

Let's look at each one briefly.

Cognition refers to the mental processes

involving in taking in

processing

storing and retrieving information.

Examples include summarizing texts, making diagrams, connecting new

information to what you already know.

These strategies improve comprehension

and long-term memory.

Metacognition is often described as thinking about your

thinking.

It includes planning your study process, monitoring your concentration

and understanding and evaluating whether your strategies worked.

Students who

monitor themselves frequently perform significantly better.

Motivation is the

engine of SRL.
